California, PA- The Women’s team recently finished off their best season in club history finishing the season at 23-5-1. Although their trip to the National Tournament was not as good as they hoped it was a success for the team moving forward into next season.

The team started off great winning their opening matchup against North Dakota State University 4-3. The following day the women would play their next two pool play games with hopes of advancing to the National Semi-Finals for the first time in club history. The team fought their way to a 2-2 tie with the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Later that evening the last obstacle for the Vulcans was last seasons runner-up the University of Alaska. Unfortunately in that game the Vulcans were never able to get it going as they fell 3-0.

The National Semi-Finals was meetings between Penn State University and defending National Champion University of Wisconsin-Stout and West Chester University and Alaska. With both Penn State and West Chester winning it was an all east final as the Vulcans rival West Chester took home the title.

California, PA- For the second straight season the Vulcans opened up the DVCHC playoffs facing the University of Delaware and for the second straight season it was a Vulcans victory.

In what was a closely contested game the Vulcans 2-0 first period lead was good enough to pull out an opening round victory over the Blue Hens to improve their record to 3-0 all-time over Delaware in the DVCHC playoffs. It was Alli Paratore and Megan Cooper that led the way with two first period goals to give the Vulcans an advantage for Maria Sciacca to shut the door on the Blue Hens for 50 minutes and seven seconds.

The Vulcans 2-1 victory earned them a semi-final matchup with West Chester for a second straight season. Unfortunately for the Vulcans this game ended exactly how the first did with a 5-1 Golden Rams victory. West Chester scored an early first period goal to take a 1-0 advantage. The score remained close through the halfway point of the second until the Golden Rams added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead into the third. Kelsey DeNardo added the Vulcans first goal of the contest early in the third on the power play but it was not enough as the Golden Rams added two more for their 5-1 victory.

On Monday the Vulcans faced the U.S. Naval academy for the third place game and from start to finish dominated the Midshipmen on their way to a 10-0 victory. Stopping 24 shots Sciacca produced yet another shutout on the season while Dana Bowersox and DeNardo each recorded a hat trick to spark the Vulcans offense. Chelsea Phipps, Lauren Lehman, Haley D’Hondt and Cooper each added a goal in the Vulcans dominating effort posting 54 shots.

The Vulcans will now begin preparation for the ACHA Division II National Tournament, which begins on March 7th. Fans can find more information on the event here.

VULCANS NOTES:

West Chester University went on to win the DVCHC Division I Championship 6-1 over the University of Maryland.

The Vulcans next action will come on Saturday March 7th at 3:30 pm when they take on North Dakota State University in their first game of the ACHA Division II National Tournament.

California, PA- In a rematch from an early season match the Vulcans and Blue Hens met at the Bethel Park BladeRunners in the final regular season weekend for the DVCHC. In a closely battled contest the two teams nearly played to a tie before Delaware pulled away with a 3-2 overtime victory. The loss dropped the Vulcans to 18-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference while the win improved the Blue Hens to 10-3 overall and 8-3 in the conference.

The Vulcans never trailed until the game was final as they scored first halfway through the first period when Megan Cooper found the back of the net from Alli Paratore. That 1-0 lead would not last into the intermission though as the Blue Hens scored with just seconds remaining in the first period on the power play to tie up the contests at 1-1.

Again in the second period the Vulcans would take the lead back this time as Lena Merlino scored from Chelsea Phipps to make it 2-1. Late in the second period though the Blue Hens again answered tying up the contests at 2-2.

After a scoreless third period both sides took to the ice for a five-minute over time period. Playing nearly all five minutes even it was the Blue Hens that broke through with four seconds remaining to secure the 3-2 victory.

In an even contest both teams recorded 36 shots on net while the difference came on specials teams. The Vulcans went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Blue Hens were 2-for-7.

SUNDAY

Following Saturday’s loss the Vulcans looked to bounce back beating the DVCHC’s top team from the south in the U.S. Naval Academy. The Vulcans struggled through the first two periods before pulling away in the third for an 8-4 victory. The win improved the Vulcans to 19-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference while the Midshipmen dropped to 8-5 overall and in the conference.

The game started right where the Vulcans had hoped jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Alli Paratore scored the first goal at 6:58 from Megan Cooper followed by a late period goal from Melissa Heisler off a Dana Bowersox assist.

Leading 2-0 to start the second period the Vulcans penalty killing woes continued as Navy cut the lead in half off a power play goal at 11:40. Less then a minute following that goal the Midshipmen tied up the contest at 10:55.

The Vulcans were able to score the games next three goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead over the Midshipmen. The first came at 4:45 of the second off a shot from Bowersox with the help of Paratore and Chelsea Phipps. Kelsey DeNardo would score the second and her first of four on the afternoon from Paratore and Cooper.

Leading 4-2 after two the Vulcans added to it early in the third when DeNardo scored her second straight from Cooper and Margo Laboon. Navy did not go away easily though as they scored two straight to bring the game to 5-4 with 11:34 remaining. At 6:36 of the period Haley D’Hondt started to distant the Vulcans scoring off passes from Bowersox and Heisler. DeNardo followed with two more goals giving her four on the afternoon and the Vulcans an 8-4 victory.

The Vulcans outshot the Midshipmen 48-16 with Maria Sciacca stopping 12 shots. Again the penalty kill struggled as Navy went 2-for-3 on their power play.

LAST TIME OUT: The Vulcans are returning home from a weekend trip in Virginia where they picked up two more victories. First they shut out the Liberty Flames 6-0 and then beat the University of Virginia Cavaliers 7-1. Delaware is coming off a 4-0 victory over the University of Maryland while the U.S Naval Academy beat American University 6-2.

VULCANS VERSUS BLUE HENS: Earlier this season the Vulcans won their first ever regular season meeting with the Blue Hens, 4-1. In that meeting Alli Paratore led the charge scoring two goals while Kelsey DeNardo and Dana Bowersox each added one of their own. Maria Sciacca stopped 17 shots allowing the only goal to Mari O’Leary. Sarah Ehrlich, of Delaware, stopped 20 shots in the contest. Currently the Blue Hens still lead the all-time series 6-3. Although the Vulcans hold a perfect 2-0 record over the Blue Hens in the DVCHC playoffs and would currently be slated for a first round matchup in next weekends playoffs.

VULCANS VERSUS MIDSHIPMEN: Sundays meeting between the Vulcans and Midshipmen will be the first of the season and only second all-time. Last year the Vulcans traveled to Annapolis to take on the Midshipmen and put on a dominating performance. In their 10-1 victory Dana Bowersox stole the show posting her first career Vulcan hat trick while Megan Cooper added two goals.
