Cal U at a Glance
The history of California University of Pennsylvania dates back over 150 years to an academy that was founded in the borough of California, PA. Today, Cal U has evolved in to one of the 14 accredited institutions that comprise the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Cal offers a choice of over 100 areas of studies in a wide variety of disciplines through its 26 departments. It is guided by its core values of integrity, civility, and responsibility, and is devoted to its mission of “Building Character, Building Careers.” Since 2004, The Princeton Review has ranked Cal U as one of the best regional universities in the Northeast. The University boasts an annual student enrollment of 9,000 and an alumni base of over 43,000 and growing.
California University is situated on a scenic bend along the banks of the Monongahela River in the small, Washington County town of California, which has a population of 6,000 people. The campus is located 32 miles south of the city of Pittsburgh, which provides nearby access to many shopping areas, restaurants, parks, museum centers, concert halls, and major sporting events. Cal U is easily accessible from PA-43 via Interstate 70 or US Route 40. It is also under an hour’s drive from the Pittsburgh International Airport, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the many outdoor activities of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. There are nearly 40 buildings spread over 92 acres of the main campus, with another 98 acres comprising a recreation complex located just 1 mile from the main campus. Academic life is the thrust of the main campus, while athletics, exercise, community, and relaxation are the focus of the recreation complex. Cal U also has satellite facilities in downtown Pittsburgh and in Canonsburg, PA, both of which offer additional educational opportunities and experiences. Cal U also offers classes in Johnstown and Somerset.
In its goal of becoming the best public university in America, Cal has invested in its future by building several new dormitories and classrooms, making computers and cutting-edge research technology accessible to all students, and increasing its involvement in the local and regional communities. New construction and renovation is evident on campus as the Cal U builds towards an even better campus setting and academic experience., while more expansion and improvement is planned for the near future.
