The Game: Friday: California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans (1-0, 0-0) at Case Western Reserve University Spartans (0-0, 0-0).

Saturday: California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans (14-4, 11-1) vs. Carnegie Mellon University Tartans (0-0, 0-0)

Date/Location/Time: Friday October 5, 2012 ~ Cleveland Heights Arena ~ 8:45 p.m. ~ Saturday October 6, 2012 ~ Bethel Park BladeRunners ¨ 8:30 p.m.

CHA OPENER/HOME OPENER: Cal U will face two familiar CHA opponents this weekend. First they will travel to Cleveland to face Case Western Reserve University and then return home for Saturdays contest when they welcome Carnegie Mellon University to the Bethel Park BladeRunners.  The Vulcans are coming off a season opening victory against Youngstown State University two weeks ago.

VULCANS VERSUS SPARTANS: The matchup between these two schools marks the second year in a row the Vulcans will open their CHA schedule in Cleveland.  Last year the Vulcans won the opening contest 8-1.  When the two teams met later in the season at Bethel Park the Vulcans recorded another victory, 14-0.

VULCANS VERSUS TARTANS: Over the past couple season these two teams have faced off numerous times with a lot at stake creating a strong rivalry.  Last year they met four times with the Vulcans picking up all four victories.  Their first meeting took extra time with the Vulcans winning 3-2 in overtime.  The second meeting was at the CONSOL Energy Center when the Vulcans took command early and never let go winning 9-2.  The two teams would meet twice in February once in the regular season and the other for the College Hockey Association Championship.  The regular season matchup ended with the Vulcans winning 6-5 and to finish out the season sweep the Vulcans took their first ever CHA Championship winning 8-5.

OTHER NOTES:

  • The Vulcans leading scorers are Andrew Topka with zero goals and four assists for four points, Nick Blair with two goals and two assists for four points and Jesse Powell with two goals and one assist for three points.  Tallen Stroman has a 4.00 GAA and a SV% of .860.
  • The California University of Pennsylvania Ice Hockey club will be holding its first annual Cal Hockey Homecoming Series on October 10th at the Rostraver Ice Garden.  All three teams will be in action with the CHA team playing at 4:00 PM.  For more information please visit http://calu.zonethemes.com/cha/?p=935
